Aero Ladies Alpine Ski Jacket
In the 1930s Alpine skiing made the transition from an exotic leisure pursuit for a handful of the rich and privileged to become a worldwide participant sport! The growth was so rapid that by 1936 there were a million American skiers. The key factor was likely the proliferation of rope tows erected across the States. Alpine skiing also fed on a lack of alternatives during the winter months--no superhighways to warmer climates and no jets to Miami. Skiing took off rapidly, not only as a participation sport, but also as a major spectator draw. Tens of thousands were turning out to watch the thrills and inevitable spills of this exciting new sport.
Like all new participant sports, skiing needed purpose-built clothing. One could easily conclude that the most stylish skiwear of the 20th Century was made in USA during the 1930s, so this era was the inspiration for Aero's design team for Skiwear styles that would fit into the Aero range.
"The Ladies Alpine Ski Jacket" is the first addition to the range--it's a short, belted leather jacket with two flapped pockets to securely store possessions, a luxurious natural sheep fur collar, heavy alpaca wool lining for warmth and storm cuffs in the sleeves for wind resistance on the slopes. The jacket comes stock with a genuine deadstock Talon zipper--though actually from the 1950s, it is identical to the zippers of the late 1930s. The final result is a practical and stylish Winter jacket designed in-house by Greg Field, a fashion and design graduate of the world renowned Heriot Watt University, and current Aero staff member.
The jacket in the photographs is constructed in Brown Battered Steerhide, but this jacket also works well in other mid weight leathers like Vicenza horsehide and goatskin.
Like all Aero jackets, the Ladies Alpine Ski Jacket can be ordered with a variety of linings, hardware finishes/styles, and thread colors. Interior pockets are also available. Click HERE for more information on ordering a custom Aero jacket!
