Every Thurston Bros custom jacket order includes the use of a fit jacket and a professional fit consultation. Fit consultation includes chest circumference evaluation as well as shoulder width and waist circumference recommendations. Additionally, the fit jacket is used to determine custom body and sleeve lengths. All fit recommendations are based on using the fit jacket as a measuring tool for the custom build. Please keep in mind that three customers with the same body measurements will choose three different sizes in the same style (one chooses a tight fit, another prefers a regular fit and the third wants a roomier fit). The fit jacket consultation makes it easy for each customer to get the fit and lengths they desire!
The Outlander represents the next step in Aero’s long relationship with wartime sheepskin. For decades they’ve recreated iconic RAF and USAAF WW2 flight jackets exactly as they left the factories of the 1940s. When the war ended, thousands of servicemen returned home with little more than their trusted sheepskin still in tow, so in peacetime, these jackets took on a new life. While some veterans treasured their originals, keeping them safely stored or passing them down through the family, many reshaped their jackets for everyday use.
Across Britain and America, in small workshops, farm sheds, and tailors’ back rooms, wartime leathers were repaired, altered, and adapted to suit the needs of civilian life. They were trimmed, patched, softened, and personalized--shaped for motorcycles, daily work, or simply the colder months ahead. No two were ever quite the same. Each one reflected a quiet kind of reinvention by taking something forged for conflict and refining it for the world that followed.
The Outlander draws its spirit from that moment of transition. It is not a reproduction of any one wartime garment, but an imagined evolution: the sort of jacket a veteran might have had made for himself using familiar materials and a skilled local hand. The cool look and practical warmth of RAF and USAAF sheepskin remains, but the lines are more civilian, the details more considered for everyday wear. Panels are subtly re-cut for easier movement. The collar shifts from cockpit utility to a shape suited to life on the ground. Finishing is cleaner, echoing the personal adjustments airmen often made--removing what was no longer needed and adding what was practical.
The name Outlander reflects the jacket’s place between two worlds--born from wartime patterns, but shaped for the years that followed. Built from the same materials and with the same respect for craft that define every Aero sheepskin, the Outlander stands as an original design. It's a quiet continuation of a story that began long ago and the perfect piece of kit for a new adventure.
