The 1950s Half Belt Deluxe, more than any other style, can be described as the all time classic American horsehide jacket!
This style remained relatively unaltered until the demise of heavy horse leather production in the late 1950s. The Sears 1939 Catalog contained the typical example of this jacket at the grand price of $7.79, and versions were still being produced under their Hercules label in 1959, the price having risen to $27.97.
Like so many styles produced in heavy duty front quarter horsehide, these classics were eventually discontinued as horsehide became more difficult to source. The lighter, more fashion orientated leathers used from the 1960's forward proved unsuitable for such classic styling.
This mouton-collared half belt is typical of the jackets produced during the early 1950's. The two deep cargo pockets are lined in moleskin for durability, as is the zip breast pocket, which completes the classic look. The back features two panel back sections--upper and lower with a false belt sewn on across the waist and straps with buckles at the side panels.
The sleeves are finished off with a studded cuff. Fur collar colors are black, dark brown, mid-brown, rust and natural (Irvin). The 1950s Half Belt Deluxe can be custom built in a variety of leathers, including Vicenza Italian veg-tanned horsehide, Goatskin, Chromexcel Steerhide, and Chromexcel FQHH.
